Hugh Burns' Keynote Address for Computers and Writing Online
2007
Keynote Address
Hugh Burns, Texas Woman's University.
"The Very Idea of the Very Virtual
University"
Monday, February 5, 2007
7:00 - 8:30pm:
Hugh Burns, Professor of
English at Texas Woman's University, will deliver the CW2007 Online Keynote Address at
7:00 p.m. CST on Monday, February 5, 2007. No stranger to rhetorical
invention, Hugh will invite the participants to consider how their
respective institutions are designing the very idea of the very virtual
university in four dimensions: global access, student success, faculty
research, and institutional excellence. "Closing the Gaps" -- the
strategic plan for higher education in Texas -- has provided Hugh the
evening's heuristic framework. For 30 years, Hugh has often been found
encouraging members of the computers and writing community to lead the
way at their respective universities. By better understanding how the
very idea of the university is transformed by virtual spaces for
teaching and learning, he believes we shall be better prepared to share
our discoveries with colleagues, policymakers, accrediting bodies, and
our many publics. In the first 20 minutes of real time, Hugh shall
scroll these four themes into AcadianaMOO,
then for the next 40 minutes (or so) all participants are welcome to
their very own ideas for designing tomorrow's very virtual university.
